Extreme gas production in anthropogenic fibrous sediments: An overlooked biogenic source of greenhouse gas emissions

چکیده
Fibrous sediments that originated from old pulp and paper industry emissions are recognized as a potential threat to the aquatic environment because they highly contaminated. In addition, biogenic degradation of organic material so-called “fiberbanks” has high produce greenhouse gases (GHG). this study, X-ray tomography, optical sensors gas analyzers were used identify quantify produced released samples two different fiberbanks. We show finer fibrous structure allows formation larger bubbles higher production rates compared coarser composed wood pieces. High contents methane (average 56% 65%) carbon dioxide 18% 20%) measured in emitted both types fiberbank. Measured fiberbanks one three orders magnitude than previously reported within studied temperature range (between 0.03 0.51 μm CH4/h/g dw over 4.7 20 °C). The for fiberbank volume likely present Sweden is estimated correspond 7% Sweden's total known GHG 2019. These findings have be significant emitter GHG.

Greenhouse gas emissions in livestock production systems
Agriculture is responsible for a significant proportion of total anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions (perhaps 18% globally), and therefore has the potential to contribute to efforts to reduce emissions as a means of minimising the risk of dangerous climate change. The largest contributions to emissions are attributed to ruminant methane production and nitrous oxide from animal waste and fert...
متن کاملUnderstanding Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Unconventional Natural Gas Production
Natural gas comprises almost one-fourth of all energy used in the U.S. New technologies, sometimes referred to as “unconventional” have enabled the production of more natural gas and have expanded domestic energy reserves. Natural gas is generally recognized as a clean-burning fuel source, producing less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per quantity of energy consumed than either coal or oil. How...

متن کاملGreenhouse gas emissions from tropical forest degradation: an underestimated source
BACKGROUND The degradation of forests in developing countries, particularly those within tropical and subtropical latitudes, is perceived to be an important contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. However, the impacts of forest degradation are understudied and poorly understood, largely because international emission reduction programs have focused on deforestation, which is easier to d...
